Marion Comi-Morog

is a content creator, UX designer, and course facilitator for a broad range of clients…
But that’s not giving you a lot of detail, is it?

Meeting Marion

If you’ve clicked on my About page, I imagine you might want to get to know me better. My name is Marion – thanks for stopping by! If you didn’t mean to end up here, you can just click here to go back to the homepage.

Alright, you’re still reading. Great! Scroll down for the “get to know me” starter pack:

1) Media? Medi-YEAH!

I have always looked to better understand the ways in which media affects us. How do the blogs we read, billboards we pass by, or Instagram posts we scroll through affect us differently? Affect different people differently? I have angled my academic work to begin answering these questions, from my research in gendered toy marketing (learn more) to social justice advertising (learn more) and movie consumption (learn more). By analyzing media and its effects on the viewer in my own studies and in previous literature, I have developed the knowledge base to create even more compelling media. I believe that the marriage of these two interests – developing media content and discovering how it affects viewers – has (and will continue to) make me more successful in both fields. This is what makes a marketer.

2) Great minds think alike, but better yet, they think together.

I thrive in a buzzing environment of collaboration and communication. Working under pressure to find creative solutions with others is partly why I enjoy my work with development and design so much — there is never a dull moment! While Davidson College does not offer a degree in marketing, the education that I’ve received in Communication studies has helped me to build the necessary skillset to work with a broad variety of clients, navigating each unique set of needs and priorities.

3) Do what you love, and love what you do.

I am a passionate believer in the “do what you love, and love what you do” attitude. If you have a passion for your work, you’ll put in the extra time and energy needed to finish the project early. You’ll bring the work home with you and think about it in your free time. Instead of leaving exhausted, you leave inspired. For me, that work is media and marketing. When people ask how I balance work as a full-time student, a part-time writing tutor, a TechChange intern, a Chelsea Music Festival intern, and a leader of several extracurricular activities, I answer that one activity doesn’t exhaust me for the other, it inspires me to work harder and to think differently. I may not have a passion to carry me through a career in dentistry or professional baseball. But I sure can create their marketing campaign.

Want the long-winded version? Just keep reading to learn all about how I’ve come to do (and love) marketing and UX design.

Marion travels abroad to Denmark, where she pursues marketing and psychology courses to learn campaign strategy and how the two fields intersect.

  • Gendered Toy Marketing Research: Jan. – May 2020

After learning about the effects that marketing and media have on children’s social perceptions, Marion develops her first website to spark the debate surrounding gendered toy marketing. • Communication Studies Minor: Jan. 2020 – Present

Realizing her passion for marketing and mass media, Marion declares her interdisciplinary minor: Communication Studies!

  • Paid Website Development: Mar. – May 2020

Prepared by her academic experiences in marketing and UX design, Marion creates her first website for a client: Good Karma Ranch. Despite challenges in site security that led the company to seek help, she successfully designed, secured, and cultivated the local company’s website to produce optimal site performance and user experience.

  • Marketing and Development Intern: May 2020Present

Marion took on a new challenge in marketing the Chelsea Music Festival as it transitioned to an online sphere — sharing music and visual art over live streams rather than in-person. She provided updated analyses of social media statistics, which allowed the Festival to apply for grant funding and gave valuable insight into marketing strategy. The Festival’s online success led them to continue releasing online originals into 2021!

  • Promoting Performing Arts: May 2020 – Present

Inspired by her work at the Chelsea Music Festival, Marion creates a new campaign for Davidson’s dance troupe, BLU. While COVID-19 prevented in-person practice or performance, social media provided a performance space at no cost. Marion created video compilations of her team members performing dance routines and marketed these videos to the broader Davidson community, doubling the troupe’s instagram following and renown.

  • TechChange Intern: June 2020 – Present

Marion begins her work at TechChange, a company that creates online courses for its clients at every step — allowing her to gain experience in marketing, design, production, facilitation, and support for a variety of client needs. With TechChange, she has worked for Facebook, Global Covenant of Mayors, Mercy Corps, and more.

  • Marketing Research: June – Aug. 2020

Nike, Inc. has employed advertising featuring athletes to oppose police brutality and sexism. Because brand and athlete related attitudes are interrelated, Marion and her colleagues examined how these factors influence public reaction to social justice based marketing. This study provides insight into marketing strategy surrounding social justice based ads, and was awarded a poster presentation at the 2021 Society for Personality and Social Psychology conference.

  • Honors-Eligible Thesis in Marketing and Psychology: Aug. 2020 – Present

Prolonged media exposure can lead to negative stereotyping of minority groups and negative self-perceptions within these groups, an effect which is particularly strong in young viewers. Therefore, it is absolutely vital to understand what media messages portray to young audiences. In Marion’s honors-eligible thesis, she will conduct  two studies that aim to examine the produced (1) and perceived (2) stereotype content created by a world-leading provider of digital youth media, the Walt Disney Company. This research will have meaningful implications for youth media providers.

  • Marketing a Facebook Conference: Dec. 2020 – Present

Through her work with TechChange, Marion was able to work with Facebook to develop a course for using and learning about gender data. Due to the success of this course, it has been extended into a 2-day conference of interactive workshops, networking events, and expert panels. Marion is responsible for various marketing efforts for the series which will premiere in February 2021 — designing marketing assets, creating a rollout plan, and organizing event agendas.

  • Looking Forward: May 2021

Marion will graduate from Davidson College in May 2021 with magna cum laude and as a member of the Psi Chi International Honors Society. After graduation, Marion intends to enter the marketing or public relations industries in order to connect audiences to services that have the potential to make their lives better.
